The Flight Control System is one of the most flight-critical systems on the aircraft. Each element of the FCS must be designed to work in harmony with the other FCS elements and in most cases need to satisfy a variety of requirements (mission, military, FAA, JAA, safety, ...). Since the FCS interfaces with almost every other systems on the aircraft, the designer must understand the interface characteristics between each of the various systems to ensure a complete system integration. The designer should understand FCS analysis and simulation to ensure that the performance of the FCS throughout the operational flight envelope is optimized-- other FCS tuning techniques are available, but they tend to drive up program cost (especially during the program test phase). The designer should understand software to ensure that the FCS control laws have been replicated correctly in software and be able to validate that all error handling has been accounted for in the code. The designer should understand hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) simulations and how it can save the program significant time and money. The designer should understand hardware/ software system integration & testing to ensure that the system works as planned-- and know what to do when it doesn't. All of these things, and many other, must be done and done right to ensure FCS success-- whether the FCS is for a transport, fighter, business jet, UAV, or missile system.

Are you currently involved in these types of activities? Manned or unmanned vehicle? Commercial or military? Is the FCS development effort tracking the plan? Are the FCS requirements being met? Has risk been minimized? Are the things that can save the program considerable time & money being done? We may be able to help.

A detailed diagram of a Flight Control System is summarized below. Enjoy.
