The design approach used on this GPS integration
is different from that used on the E-4B GPS
integration. The approach used on the E-4B involved
replacing the existing INSs with new INSs that
could accommodate the GPS information. This design
approach utilizes an FMS to integrate the
navigation sources (INS, GPS, RNAV) to formulate
the navigation solution. The FMS solution provides
better capabilities for flight planning, flight
plan/route display, and future growth than the
original E-4B design. Technical limitations
prevented use the FMS solution on the E-4B at the
time of the original design. This type of approach is currently being used to
integrate GPS on many aircraft. Is your approach
similar to this? How is it different? Are you
integrating GPS thru an FMS (as shown below) or
thru the INS (as shown for the E-4B GPS
integration)? Is your approach taking maximum
advantage of GPS and all that it has to offer? We
may be able to help. A detailed diagram of an FMS-based GPS
integration is summarized below. Enjoy. Note: To keep the detail
